Hey DC! Go-Go music is and will forever be a part of DC culture. I am pleased to be a part of the District Government's efforts to make Go-Go the official music of the Nation's Capital. The culturally influential musical genre originated in the Washington, DC area during the mid-60s to late-70s, and is a distinctive regional music style that combines funk with elements of R&B, blues, soul, and salsa. Pioneered by Chuck Brown and heavy on bass and percussion, Go-Go by the early 1980s had become the most popular music of D.C. dance halls (called Go-Gos).
Go-Go is more than a genre, it is a movement and a way of life. Here at the #EntertainDC Office, we value its impact and contributions to the District. From the premiere of "Straight Crankin' A Go-Go Documentary" in September of 2018 to highlighting the Go-Go community on our networks, we are dedicated to carrying on its legacy. The establishment of Go-Go music as the official music of DC will not only protect its historical significance, it'll ensure that everyone in the world will know that the official music of DC is Go-Go!
Let's make Go-Go the Official Music of the District of Columbia! #DontMuteDC #LongLiveGoGo.
We are also excited to develop and establish an innovative apprenticeship program supporting Mayor Bowser's push to create a pathway to the middle class for the creative community. The Bowser Administration announced the launch of the Creative Economy Career Access Program: Stagehand Apprenticeship (CECAP: Stagehand) as part of the 202Creates initiative. This new on-the-job training program will offer underserved District of Columbia residents access to a first of its kind apprenticeship program, providing technical stagehand training, mentorship, and a pathway to union membership.
A stagehand is a technician that works backstage or behind the scenes at performance venues, theaters, sound-stages, television studios, or convention centers. The inaugural year of the CECAP: Stagehand Apprenticeship Program will administer two, six-month training cohorts. Each cohort will provide four District residents an immersive, paid, on-the-job training and apprenticeship opportunity. The District resident trainees will also train at some of the most preeminent entertainment, special event, and sports venues in the District, including the Entertainment and Sports Arena, the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, the DC Armory, and DAR Constitution Hall.
